As the central business district of St. Louis, the downtown area is the hub of tourism and entertainment and functions as the anchor of the entire St. Louis metropolitan area.
St. Louis was founded by Pierre Laclede, who chose the area because of its access to the river for trade and transportation. Laclede found the present-day downtown area the perfect place to run a bustling fur trade with the Native Americans of the region.
Downtown is the site of many corporate headquarters, including Nestlé Purina PetCare, Peabody Energy Corporation, Ralcorp and its former subsidiary, Post Foods.
