No trip to Charlotte would be complete without a visit to the Vietnamese sandwich shop Crispy Banh Mi. The name of the restaurant is straight to the point as their specialty is, in fact, Vietnamese sandwiches called Banh Mi. Banh Mi is the product of Vietnam's complex history, made as a fusion of traditional southeast Asian ingredients such as pork sausage and pickled carrots and French ingredients such as a baguette that were introduced to the region under colonial rule. The Banh Mi was popularized in Saigon during the 1950s as a quick meal that could easily be sold and eaten on the go. Refugees from the revolt against colonial rule, and later the Vietnam War, spread this food throughout the world - including the United States. There is a wide variety of Banh Mi available at Crispy Banh Mi, but the local favorite is simply entitled Crispy’s Favorite.
Crispy’s Favorite consists of carrot, cucumber, daikon, cilantro, and jalapeno pepper. If that or the other varieties of sandwiches do not catch your attention, there are other options such as the pork noodle bowl. Crispy Banh Mi also features traditional Vietnamese desserts. In addition to the food, Crispy Banh Mi is also noted for its authentic Thai tea which is a welcome addition to any of their menu items. Slushies made from a variety of fruits ranging from mango to lychee to durian means there is always something to try that you are unlikely to find anywhere else nearby. Check out your new favorite food today.
