The Civic Opera Building was designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White. The building contains the Civic Opera House where the Lyric Opera of Chicago performs.
Completed in 1929 — just before the stock market crash — it cost $23 million to build. The Art Deco skyscraper is 45 stories tall with 22-story wings.
The building management and opera company both went bankrupt during the Great Depression.
The Civic Opera House inspired the opera house in Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane." The idea came from an urban legend that claims Samuel Insull built the opera house after his wife was rejected by the New York Metropolitan Opera. However, Insull's wife was not an opera singer, and perhaps it was his daughter that was spurned.
