City Lit Theater is one of the pioneers of the off-Loop theatre movement.
Founded with $210 in 1979, when there were still so few theatres in Chicago that we received a congratulatory letter from Tennessee Williams, City Lit was the first theatre in the nation devoted to stage adaptations of literary material, a form that has since become quite popular.
Since 1999, we have resided in the historic Edgewater Presbyterian Church building on Bryn Mawr Avenue, which was when we moved into it the only theatre space in all of Edgewater.
Now heading into our 40th season, and happy to be part of a thriving Edgewater theatre community, City Lit explores an eclectic mix of fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, essays, and drama in performance.
Not only do we produce work that other theatres in town are unlikely to do, we make a point of producing work that is unlike other shows City Lit has previously done: a Jeff-recommended revival of a 19th-Century comedy unproduced in Chicago for 120 years in one slot, a stage adaptation of a classic or forgotten or current novel in another, a brand new translation of a Greek tragedy in another, a world premiere play by a Chicago playwright in yet another, and so on.
Authors and playwrights whose work will be onstage during the Year of Chicago Theatre will be Stephen Vincent Benét, W. S. Gilbert & Arthur Sullivan, Peter Parnell, and our resident playwright Kristine Thatcher.
What ties all our work together is an abiding belief in the power and beauty of the spoken written word.
