Cheer Up Charlies originated as a food truck with nightly dance parties and free margaritas. It soon seized an opportunity to movie into a brick in mortar on East 6th Street. A community space first and a bar second, Cheer Ups forged a name for itself with its unique drinks like kombucha cocktail and kale margaritas. It also became well known for supporting local musicians and being a bar for anyone and everyone. They ended up having to leave the east side and relocated to the music venue loaded Red River district. It was a perfect fit.
They ended up having to leave the east side and relocated to the vibrant and music venue loaded Red River district. For a bar that put such an emphasis on local artist and musicians, it was a perfect fit. There is a gorgeous outdoor patio and stage replete with a giant rock wall and funky lighting. Inside they serve the unique vegan drinks in what feels like a rustic art studio with a stage.
The come as you are approach of Cheer Up Charlies has been a hit in the area along with offering a much needed LBGT viewpoint to this stretch of Austin. A gay bar where everyone feels at home, that was the idea. In that spirit Cheer Ups has been an undeniable success, bringing social consciousness along with open minded fun, unique cocktails, and of course great music.
