If you're looking for a charming, unique lunch experience, then Carter & Cooley Co. is a great choice. This deli takes pride in the fact that they've been serving the freshest sandwiches in Houston for almost 30 years. What sets Carter & Cooley Co. apart from other lunch spots is that the deli is housed in a one-of-the-kind location. When the owners acquired the property, it was an old, historic drugstore. They lovingly restored the space and turned it into one of Houston's best sandwich shops. Folks can enjoy fresh sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts all while enjoying the charming ambiance. During your visit, take note of the antique tin ceiling and original transom windows. In terms of house specialties, the deli has four signature sandwiches—the Reuben, the Italian, BLT, and the Muffaletta. However, even the most devoted foodie may not know the history behind the Muffaletta sandwich.
Often known as a distant relative of the Italian sub, the Muffaletta originated in New Orleans and was created by Italian immigrants. The sandwich uses a type of round Sicilian sesame bread and is loaded with a variety of Italian charcuterie. Various meats and cheeses are used—ham, salami, provolone, capicola, and mortadella—then it's topped with a spicy, Creole olive salad. It's truly a New Orleans sandwich that can be found right in Houston. Carter & Cooley is located in the Historic Downtown Heights 19th Street Shopping district. Cover photo courtesy of Pexels.
