Located about a 90–minute drive south of Atlanta in Pine Mountain Valley, Callaway Resort & Gardens offers outdoor sports, a spa, and a variety of seasonal events. During the holiday season, it’s best known for “Festival in Lights,” a spectacular outdoor display of over 8 million lights that National Geographic has listed as one of the world’s top 10 light displays. If you’re looking for a family-friendly holiday activity, this regional favorite is worth the drive. This trailer from their 2019 season gives a sense of the scale:
The yearly display is made up of over a dozen roadside “scenes” set to music. Some, like “Christmas Tree Lane” and “March of the Toy Soldiers,” feature classic Christmas themes while others, such as “Firefly Cove” and “Twin Trees,” offer unexpected visual treats. In addition to the scenes, there are short ten-minute shows at the resort’s lakeside beach and a Christmas Village with shopping and kids’ activities.
“Fantasy in Lights” opens in late November and December, and most visitors see it via the open-air “Jolly Trolley.” If it’s cold out, you can also drive through in your own car. Visitors can purchase tickets for just these experiences or packages that include a stay at the resort. Check their calendar for special nights for those who prefer to explore by foot or bike, get close-up photos, or attend a New Year’s Eve party featuring fireworks.
Fantasy in Lights has been a tradition since 1992 when it began with five scenes created by former Disney Imagineers. Since then, more scenes have been added, all of which were custom designed and only viewable at the Callaway Resort & Gardens.
