Cairns Mercantile - Humphrey’s Store

“James Cairns built his first mercantile during the busy days of the Lulu City Gold Rush of 1881. An inside counter at Cairns Mercantile served as the Grand Lake Post Office. Cairns renovated his store to better serve the residents. For decades his tenancy kept his business open despite the lack of business due to the abandonment of Lulu City. In 1924, Matilda G Humphrey purchased the Cairns Mercantile. She enlarged the building, offered more merchandise, catered to residents as well as summer tourists, and installed a soda fountain that still exists.” ‘Go Grand,’ Kristi Martens
