View Chicago is a Burnham-style collaboration between a diverse group of Chicago’s educational, cultural and civic institutions.
Burnham’s vision for Chicago is sometimes referred to as an attempt to create "Paris on the prairie." Based on the Bassin de Latone at the garden of Versailles near Paris, Buckingham Fountain was commissioned by Kate Buckingham to honor her late brother, Clarence. The fountain was designed by Burnham’s colleague, Edward H. Bennett.
This location was originally considered for the Field Museum, but A. Montgomery Ward successfully sued the city to maintain the park’s open space and keep the lakefront “forever open, free and clear.”
