Bluejacket is a gorgeous, modern microbrewery in southeastern DC that offers more than twenty unique beers and impressive brunch, lunch, and dinner menus. Built in a historic naval yard manufacturing complex known as the Broilermaker shops, Bluejacket takes its name from U.S. naval enlistees who were nicknamed after the bluejacket manuals they had to read as newcomers to the force. The brewery maintains its industrial feel while still feeling warm and inviting. Large windows brighten the space and open seating makes it a perfect place for large groups and events. Beer Director Greg Engert and Director of Brewery Operations Ro Guenzel started the brewery in an effort to produce a broad range of styles and flavors of beers. On any given day at the brewery, guests can choose from twenty Bluejacket beers on tap and five Bluejacket cask ales that are not available anywhere else in the city.
Bluejacket’s Lost Weekend Citra IPA is a best-seller, offering drinkers a bright and juicy fruit-forward array of tangerine, citrus, and peach in a golden-hued glass. The Jam Strawberry Vanilla Berliner Weisse is a bit more experimental. This tart and funky brew is a crushable sour wheat ale infused with strawberries, vanilla, and milk sugar, which cuts through the tangy lemon undertones and packs a flavor punch like no other. Cask aged ales like the Yardbird EKG Bitter and Mars Hotel Horchata Sweet Stout give beer connoisseurs something different to explore. Patrons who love the beer here can visit the bottle shop and grab a case to go. The dining at Bluejacket is far and beyond what’s typical of the average brewery. Executive Chef Marcelle Afram sources local ingredients and reimagines hearty classics like steamed mussels and beer brined double-cut pork-chop. Gourmet sandwiches, seasonal salads and vegetables, and bar snacks satisfy cravings at any hunger level, and servers can recommend beer pairings for any menu item.
Bluejacket is a regular attendee at local brew fests and a favorite destination for private events. The brewery offers tasting tours at varying levels ranging from $29-$35. Advanced booking is recommended as the tours are a popular destination activity. On days when a home game is scheduled for the Nationals, tours are not available.
