Constructed in 1857 by Joseph Russell Jones, the Belvedere Manion is this considered Galena's finest mansion. Jones was an enterprising businessman and a congressman in the House of Representatives. Additionally, he was a close friend of Ulysses S. Grant and an acquaintance of Abraham Lincoln. His success allowed him to build one of the most impressive homes in Galena. Jones's historic home has gained notoriety as one of the finest examples of Italianate architecture built during this era. Today, the lavish home has 22 rooms featuring an eclectic collection of antiques, movie props, and personal items of celebrities. It is privately owned.
The Belvedere Mansion and Gardens are open to the public from mid-May to mid-November. During opening hours, a guided tour begins every 15 minutes and no reservations are necessary. Staff instruct visitors to simply ring the front doorbell.
The Belvedere Gardens are a more recent addition to the property. The owner hired a landscape architect to create a formal country garden and a quiet place for reflection. The Belvedere Mansion encourages guests to enjoy their seasonal flowers, holiday displays, and Victorian patio.
