Belle Isle

Belle Isle is a great place to visit if you are looking to step a little bit out of the city and experience nature. The main way to get to Belle Isle is by taking a pedestrian footbridge, which is a fun experience in itself. You can access the footbridge from Tredegar Street in the northern area of the city. In 2003, "Cold Mountain," a Civil War movie based on a novel, was filmed throughout the country of Romania but also within the state of Virginia—including the Belle Isle. "Cold Mountain" has an A-list cast that includes Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, and Renée Zellweger.

The premise of the movie involves a wounded soldier who is trying to make his way back to his home located in Cold Mountain, North Carolina. The scenery at Belle Isle made it a perfect area for the soldier to trek through during his journey home. James River runs through the area and this is where a major scene takes place in the movie. You can find other scenes within Virginia, including one in which the main character is taken to a colonial mansion, turned into a hospital, which is actually a plantation located in Williamsburg. Large flat rocks surround the island making it very popular for people to come and sunbathe during the warmer months. Although it looks inviting, it is not recommended to swim in the water due to the fact that the rapids can be quite strong. Nevertheless, this is a fun and gorgeous place to spend an afternoon or even a day!

Be sure to stick around until sunset to see some truly stunning views. Cover Image Credit:
