Barfly's checks off all the boxes that are necessary for a great dive bar. Cheap drinks? Check, the regular prices are so cheap here no one even cares what the daily specials or happy hour deals are. Dark corners that may contain anything? Check, windowless and black save for the lights above the pool tables. Great music? Check, the juke box is an eclectic mix of indie rock, punk, and a little old country for good measure. Barfly's may be a young upstart compared to some of the other dives in town but it is well on it's way to being a classic. Established in March of 2001, it still has some of it's original regulars. The north Airport neighborhood may have gentrified around it but Barfly's continues uphold the grungy laid-back Austin dive bar tradition.

Barfly's was once voted most likely place in Austin to make a bad decision, and it's not hard to see why. The bartenders here pour drinks that could take the paint off your car. Barfly's has the well deserved reputation as having the strongest drinks in town, so be careful on the stairs out the patio. While there a great many bars who would claim to have Austin's most iconic drink, a great case could be made for the "Happy Meal" at Barflys. A shot of Jaeger and a Lone Star for a fiver has been a saving grace for Austonian's on a budget for the 17 years that Barfly's has been on the scene. Everyone needs a "Happy Meal" from time to time and hopefully Barflys will be serving them up for a long time to come.
