Atlas Brew Works is a neighborhood brewery that produces artisanal craft beer in the growing Ivy City neighborhood. Atlas Brew Works opened in 2013 when founder Justin Cox and friends decided to bring their award-winning homebrews to a wider audience. Since then, Atlas has gained a loyal following and become popular for their take on sours, saisons, and gose.
To achieve the signature flavor in their Ugly & Stoned Sour, the brewery takes near rotten fruit that is close to being thrown away and brews them to achieve maximum tartness while still maintaining depth of flavor. Their Blood Orange Gose is slightly sour but with hints of berry and citrus that give it a hint of sweetness. For those who don’t enjoy face puckering brews, the Ponzi IPA and Dance of Days Pale Ale are highly drinkable options. Flights are available so that patrons can try a selection of the sixteen rotating offerings. Growler fills are also provided.
Atlas Brew Works is dog-friendly and kid-friendly. There’s an abundance of board games, some arcade games, and plenty of seating for groups of all sizes. Atlas doesn’t have an in-house kitchen, but some snacks are available in the guerilla vending machine, which has a bunch of local offerings. Sometimes, the brewery partners with food trucks, but guests are allowed to bring outside food on nights when a pop-up isn’t scheduled. Atlas Brew Works has been 100 percent powered by solar since 2015, when the brewery partnered with Solar Solution to lessen its carbon footprint. The brewery prides itself on using sustainable energy as a means to educate the public on environmental stewardship and build community around responsible brewing practices.
Due to the high ceilings and open space, the acoustics are not as ideal as they could be, but that doesn't stop Atlas Brew Works from hosting live music and supporting the local heavy metal scene. Atlas offers brewery tours on Saturdays. A visit to the taproom or competing in weekly trivia are other great options for fun.
