Dining at the Aster Cafe when the outdoor patio is filled with friends and families, chatting happily over their lattes, is like a momentary escape to a Spanish plaza or French esplanade. Located in the St. Anthony district of SE Main Street, the Aster Cafe is considered to be housed on the most beautiful street in Minneapolis. Diners are offered magnificent views of the Mississippi River and the downtown skyline over brunch, and afterwards can stroll through the nearby Father Hennepin Bluff Park.
In the You Tube video below, Aster Cafe owner Amy Spartz describes the peaceful and serene atmosphere of Main Street, and the St. Anthony district in general. You will also learn a bit about the architecture of the building, which is the oldest brick building in Minneapolis.
The exquisite menu and artistically crafted dishes, prepared through a team led by a professional Executive Chef, use 100% fresh ingredients with no fried food. The Cafe Specials menu offers both a Shawarma Bowl, and a vegan Shawarma Bowl. The vegan bowl includes vegan feta to add that salty bite of rich flavor, without the need for goat milk. If you are visiting over brunch or lunch, check out the English Pea and Asparagus Salad, which features a poached egg and oyster mushrooms. If you are more into meat, the side of fennel sausage is house-made and is a spicy addition to any of the brunch menu plates.
In 2012, City Pages awarded Aster Cafe as the “Best Restaurant for a First Date”. Its meal selection even includes a Romantic Share Plate menu. These are appetizers, and some of them might test the adventurous spirit of your next potential new love. Will they suggest the Cheese Plate, or is the Mezze Plate more their speed? After the meal, if the date has gone well, a romantic walk along the cobblestone streets to watch the sunset over the Mississippi River can close out the evening.
