The Gibbes Museum of Art

Welcome to the Artful Evening event! First stop: the Gibbes. The Gibbes Museum of Art is home to the foremost collection of American art that incorporates the story of Charleston. The Museum connects the city and region’s artistic past to a vibrant contemporary art scene. Explore and learn about the museum as you solve for your challenge!

History of the Gibbes Museum

A bustling seaport in the 1700s, Charleston was a melting pot of cultures, religions, and traditions. Powered by the rice and indigo trade, and slavery, it was the 4th largest city in America in 1790 – and the wealthiest. Like Philadelphia, Boston and New York, what distinguished Charleston then – was art. Charleston was home to some of America’s earliest art, collectors, and artists, who made the City both a muse and a subject. Taking its turn as one of the nation’s richest cities – in money and culture – Charleston was also home to America’s original sin, slavery – and a war that divided the nation. In 1888, when Charleston was financially and culturally on its knees, benefactor James Gibbes left a bequest to the City to build an art museum. When the Gibbes Museum opened in 1905, the nation celebrated what Charleston has always understood: the power of art – to inspire the imagination, heal the hurt, revel in the experience, rebuild what was broken, nourish the souls, and release all that was held back.

Permanent Collection

The Gibbes Museum of Art's permanent collection provides a dynamic introduction to the visual culture of America and the American South from the colonial era to the present.

Paintings, sculptures, miniature portraits, works on paper, decorative art objects, and multi-media installations, created by American artists, express the evolving aesthetic tastes of this city.

The Gibbes collection has deep roots in history and has grown and transformed along with the city. New research, methods of interpretation, and discoveries of objects continually increase knowledge, promote social inclusion, and fill gaps in our shared culture. The collection contains artworks inspired by this region’s unique landscape and cultural heritage, as well as cosmopolitan works that demonstrate art patronage through the ages.
