Written By NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project

The first initiative to document historic and cultural sites associated with the LGBT community in New York City, illustrating the richness of the city's history and the community's influence on America.

About

This experience is researched, written, and produced by the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project, an award-winning cultural heritage initiative and educational resource documenting and highlighting historic sites connected to the LGBT community throughout New York City. Founded by preservation professionals in 2015, the Project is identifying hundreds of sites from the 17th century through 2000 that illustrate the richness of the city’s LGBT history and the community’s contributions to American culture. The sites included on each Vamonde experience are limited to the research we have included on the project website so far. The project’s mission to make an invisible history visible includes publishing historical narratives on its website, researching and nominating LGBT sites to the National Register of Historic Places, curating walking tours, presenting lectures, engaging the community through events, and developing education opportunities.

Sponsors

Funding for this experience is sponsored, in part, by the generous support of American Express, Con Edison, and a Humanities New York Action Grant.
