History of Tampa Bay

The shores of Tampa Bay have been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. The Weedon Island Culture is believed to have existed there 2,000 years ago, with indigenous groups such as the Tocobaga and Pohoy living there. European contact began in the early 16th Century, with the arrival of Spanish conquistadors. Florida was purchased by the United States from Spain in 1821, and Fort Brooke - an isolated frontier outpost - was established in 1824 at the mouth of the Hillsborough River in Downtown Tampa. It would begin development as a major city in the 1880s.
