Historic & Modern: Illinois Tech's Architecture

Illinois Tech was created by the merger of Armour Institute and Lewis Institute in 1940, but our legacy on today's 130-acre Mies Campus actually began in 1890. It was then that Frank Wakely Gunsaulus delivered his "million dollar sermon," that with $1 million, he could build a school where students of all backgrounds could prepare for meaningful roles in a changing industrial society; which lead to the 1893 creation of the Armour Institute. Today, Illinois Tech is the only technology-focused university in the city of Chicago. Many of our alumni and students are pioneers in research, engineering, science, architecture, business, design, technology, and law; ensuring Illinois Tech's legacy is not just historic, but modern and evolving.
