Helena Museum: Oldest Museum in Arkansas

With humble beginnings as first a fire station and then a modest public library, today the Helena Museum of Philips County is dedicated to preserving the history of the Arkansas Delta. Featuring one of the oldest and most comprehensive collections in the state, here you'll find Native American and military artifacts, vintage toys and first edition signed books, and memorabilia from local businesses that have been around for longer than the museum itself. It even boasts their very own ghost: One Maybelle Thatcher, who is said to roam the halls during the full moon in search her lost love, Ralph Mooney, a victim of drowning during a violent storm on the Mississippi River. On the National Register of Historic Places, the museum is housed in the oldest civic building in Helena. Cover photo credit: wikipedia.
