Chicago Tree Project

In an effort to reclaim some of the thousands of trees that have been lost to diseases like emerald ash borer and Dutch elm disease, Chicago artists have gone forward with transforming these hulking remnants into something new, that speaks to a new type of public art. Some sculptors want to draw attention to the large amount of trees dying, others want to create a symbol of new hope, a shelter for animal life. Some want to remind others to reduce their carbon footprint-ease your foot off the pedal. Discover the stories behind these sculptors, and just maybe they’ll inspire you to create your own interpretations of urban nature.
