Capital History of Austin

In 1836, when Texas won its independence from Mexico, Austin did not yet exist except as a plot of land along the Colorado River known as Waterloo. The story of how it became the capital of Texas and an attractive place to live and work is intertwined with the stories of Texas's early days as a republic and later a new US state.
