Bulfinch's Boston

What should an American city look like? Charles Bulfinch and his contemporaries, the first generation of American architects to design for the new and highly exceptional republic, answered this question with the "Federal" style that we now associate with America's most familiar landmarks. It turns out Boston's architectural authority actually had no formal education in the field, but that didn't stop him from designing the very buildings that have defined Boston for centuries.
