Buena Vista Heritage: 1882 Courthouse Museum

Built as a courthouse in 1882, the building served as the county seat of Chaffee County until 1930, when the county seat moved to Salida. The building was then sold to the school district for $1, and the school operated from 1932 to 1972. It was then sold back to the town for $1 and in 1976 it was reopened as the Buena Vista Heritage Museum to save the building from being torn down. In 2007 a vote was held to allow the museum to buy the museum and assume full ownership of the largest item in our collection: the building. The vote passed by 70%, and the building was sold to Buena Vista Heritage for $1. Since then BVH has undergone renovations to restore the building through grants provided by History Colorado State Historical Fund. The most recent grant completed was to restore the cupola, and repaint it to its original colour, the copper red you see now.
