Six Square | Austin's Black Cultural District

Austin's Negro League and Its Historic Playing Fields

Austin's Negro League helped bring the Six Square neighborhood on Austin's Eastside together during one of the most difficult times in history, segregation. Explore the history by visiting LC Anderson, Austin's only black high school during the early to mid-1900s; Huston-Tillotson University where Karl Downs influenced men and women, reshaping history; and beautifully restored Downs Field, where the community came together to remember "The Greats" with a unique art project involving the entire community.
